Why has Springer Verlag published so many fake and bogus papers? One More Proof in our blog:

Why has Springer Verlag published so many fake and bogus papers? One More Proof in our blog:   Springer Verlag journal on hold for “pattern of inappropriate and compromised peer review”

Springer has put a cell biology journal on hold, “effective immediately,” after finding a “pattern of inappropriate and compromised peer review.”

An internal review of the journal Cell Biochemistry and Biophysics has revealed a pattern of inappropriate and compromised peer review. As a result, the scientific integrity of the journal cannot be guaranteed. As a first measure, in addition to launching a thorough investigation, we have placed the journal on hold effective immediately. We will be providing further information on springer.com as events warrant.
The journal has an impact factor of 2.380, according to its site, and ranks 124 out of 185 in the cell biology category of Thomson Scientific’s Journal Citations Reports.
A Springer spokesperson told us the publisher couldn’t comment further, as the investigation is ongoing.
We’re trying to reach editor in chief Edward J. Massaro and will update with news as we learn it. [See update.]
Update, 3:35 p.m., 3/13/2015: We’ve spoken with Massaro, but the conversation didn’t clear things up. Massaro told us he was not informed about the reason for the hold, nor has anyone from the journal contacted him since it happened more than a week ago:
I honestly have no idea.
what the publisher’s move is all about, he said, but he denied having done anything unethical regarding peer review.
I have enough information to know what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.
Massaro called the stoppage “completely idiotic” and said it threatened to seriously undermine the journal’s standing.
I’m deadly afraid of the fact that having closed down my journal we may be losing a lot of primo people [who will submit to other publications].

An end to fake papers? New software to check for SCIgen-created manuscripts

springerSorry, fans of papers by Maggie Simpson and I. P. Freely, your days of chortling may be coming to an end.
Springer, responding to a case last year in which it and IEEE had to eventually retract more than 120 papers created by SCIgen, is making software that detects such manuscripts freely available.
From a Springer press release:
After intensive collaboration with Dr. Cyril Labbé from Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France, Springer announces the release of SciDetect, a new software program that automatically checks for fake scientific papers. The open source software discovers text that has been generated with the SCIgen computer program and other fake-paper generators like Mathgen and Physgen. Springer uses the software in its production workflow to provide additional, fail-safe checking. Springer and the University are releasing the software under the GNU General Public License, Version 3.0 (GPLv3) so others in the scientific and publishing communities can benefit.
Springer had been working with Labbé since last year, and funded a PhD in his lab to work on the project.
Our dogs are disappointed that they will not be able to contribute to the scientific literature as easily, but SciDetect seems like a good development presuming publishers actually use it.

University of Toronto agrees that WASET conferences are fake. Our blog fakeconferences.blogspot.com has warned the academic community very early about the fake / bogus organization WASET

Fake Conference Advertisement

Phishing AdvisoryIt has come to our attention that a false event (ICCSET) has been advertised as taking place at Chestnut Residence on June 15 and 16, 2015.   A notice about this scam advisory has been placed on Chestnut’s Official Website at this link.
The website in question, waset.org, appears to be fake, although very elaborate in nature. The scam targets academics internationally, gathering papers, fees, registration information, and potentially other personal information.
ITS has identified 86 more websites hosted on the same IP address, and they all appear to be associated with academics in one fashion or another.  At this time, it is unclear if all the aforementioned websites are malicious in nature.

What can you do about this?

ITS asks all IT professionals to please inform faculty about this (and similar) scams.  Although this scam does not appear to be new, it does not seem to have the visibility amongst its potential victims that it should.

If you visited this website and provided information, please contact your local IT support for further assistance
